Testosterone Replacement Shown to Benefit Young Male Cancer Survivors

Hormone Replacement Therapy in San Antonio and Austin

Hormone replacement therapy is quickly becoming a desired treatment option for both men and women. Research has shown that individuals lead more fulfilling lives with hormone optimization. Hormone balance has been proven to reduce the chance of contracting diseases such as osteoporosis, Alzheimer's, diabetes, heart disease, impaired vision and many cancers. Various studies have also shown that hormone replacement therapy can help improve fatigue, lack of energy, sleep disruption, mental focus and memory, hot flashes and night sweats, difficulty losing weight, mood swings, joint pain and sexual performance.
A recent double-blind study conducted by PLOS Medicine has shown that young males who have survived cancer can benefit from hormone replacement therapy. While undergoing chemotherapy and radiation, young cancer patients experience a disruption in normal cell growth. The study compared young male survivors of testicular cancer, lymphoma, and leukemia with their healthy counterparts. Overall, the researchers noticed the most common late-onset side effects cancer survivors experienced were lower testosterone levels, higher fat mass, and a lower quality of life.
Over the span of six months, a total of 136 men were divided into two groups. One group received testosterone replacement therapy and the second group received a placebo. Nine out of ten men within the study had been treated for testicular cancer. In conclusion, they found that those who received hormone replacement therapy lost an average of 1.8 kg of fat mass and gained 1.5 kg in lean mass. By decreasing fat mass, they determined the study participants to have a lower chance of long term side effects in life such as of heart disease.
The Urology Place specializes in hormonal wellness within San Antonio and Austin for both males and females. Our Board Certified Urologists offer various treatments to promote hormone balance. One of our growing therapies include BioIdentical Hormone Pellets, this treatment involves the placement of grain-like capsules in the upper hips or buttocks. The capsules work by steadily releasing consistent levels of hormones into the blood stream. This therapy is favored in comparison to topicals and injections as it is more convenient and less painful. Hormone pellets have a feasibility advantage as they are only needed two to four times per year. We use bioIdentical pellets, meaning the hormones mimic the same type of hormones that are naturally produced in our bodies making it a safer option.
