Dr. Naveen Kella is board certified in urology, with a fellowship in urologic oncology and robotic surgery. He is known for his experience treating prostate cancer and has performed over 2,000 robotic prostate cancer surgeries. Literature notes the best surgeons usually have superior experience. Dr. Kella is the most experienced robotic prostate surgeon in San Antonio and South Texas. In fact, he is one of the most experienced in the nation.
In 2009, 2010 and 2011, Dr. Kella performed more robotic prostate surgeries than anyone else in Texas, according to Intuitive Surgical, who makes the DaVinci Robot. What values and characteristics do top urologists possess? “Experience, education and a great team are key,” states Kella. When asked about his success, Dr. Kella gives much credit to his clinic and surgical teams. He has performed nearly all of his robotic prostatectomy cases in the same hospital with the same team. Thus, the team has amassed collective excellence as a single performing unit that is unmatched by nearly anyone in the nation.
Stemming from his extensive educational background and experience, Dr. Kella highly advocates research to improve care for prostate cancer. He has been the principal investigator on numerous clinical studies, including Cellanyx, Provenge, Protox, and GVAX. In addition he has consulted for companies such as Cook Surgical, US HIFU, and Intuitive Surgical.
Dr. Kella’s pursuit of excellence in urology care has and continues to be honored. Notably, he was selected for inclusion as a Texas Rising Star in 2014 and 2015, and in Texas Super Doctors in both 2014 and 2015. He has won these and many other accolades for his efforts to bring out the best in robotic surgery and overall urology care. He did live surgery at the American Urology Association, which was an honor. The AUA represents urologists across the nation. He also performed live surgery at the Annual Kimbrough Urological Seminar, the national conference for government urologists.
Helping teach other surgeons is important. As such, Dr. Kella has travelled across the country teaching other urologists about robotic prostate cancer surgery. Additionally, he maintains a YouTube channel with numerous videos showing his technique. Other surgeons’ comments compliment Dr. Kella’s approach to robotic surgery.
Most of Dr. Kella’s surgery cases are performed at St. Lukes Baptist or at Foundation Surgical Hospital. St. Luke’s was the first hospital in San Antonio to bring robotic surgery to the city. Foundation Hospital is a newer outpatient facility that consistently ranks highly in both patient and surgeon satisfaction surveys. Dr. Kella is also credentialed at other hospitals across the city, including Methodist Healthcare, Christus Santa Rosa, and Cumberland Surgical Hospital.
Dr. Kella completed his undergraduate degree at Stanford University with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering. He then completed medical school at UT Southwestern in Dallas, followed by an internship and residency at Tufts New England Medical Center. He was Chief Resident at Tufts from 2002-2003, then moved to Houston to pursue his fellowship in urologic oncology and robotic surgery at the Baylor College of Medicine. After his training, Dr. Kella moved to San Antonio to start working in private practice, which he still does today.
